On Mixing Meat With Pastries

I take food very seriously. And right now? I’m on a one-woman food tour of Malaysia, eating street food day in and day out.

The longest lines, the most hype, and the best meals? All come from the stalls that do one thing really well.

Take Mon Chinese Beef Roti.

It was the only line I was willing to stand in and the place that may have changed my mind about combining my meats with my pastries.

All they served were beef and chicken rotis, and they’ve been perfecting them for over a thousand years.

The line wrapped around the block, it was considered short while I was there.

They didn’t need to pay off influencers to hype them up or practice any fancy marketing tactics. Their reputation alone was enough to create demand and inspire people to talk about their food experience.

When you master one thing? When you become known for that thing? People will line up for it. They’ll tell their friends about it. You don’t need to chase customers down—they come looking for you.

This is how businesses become legends. It’s not by trying to be everything to everyone. It’s by becoming undeniably great at something specific.

Mon Chinese could have added to their menu to expand their business but they did the thing that makes businesses iconic and stuck to what they were good at.

And you?

Is your business trying to serve everyone? Are you offering everything under the sun because you think that’s what will bring in more clients? Or maybe you’re offering nothing or chaos because you don’t understand what you’re THING is.

The more specific your specialty, the stronger your brand.

When you try to do it all, you dilute what makes you special. But when you narrow in on your signature strength? That’s when word-of-mouth marketing works in your favor. That’s when your business has longevity. That’s when people line up around the block for you.

While I was on safari in Kenya, I highlighted this from the book I was reading:

“Everyone has the perfect gift to give to the world—and if each of us is freed up to give the gift that is uniquely ours to give, the world will be in total harmony”

In our first hour of working together, I’ll know what makes you special and how to take that passion and purpose and monetize it. I can recognize your THING.

Take Katy, creator and owner of The Playful Professional. Before we even started working together, I recognized her THING as we were emailing back and forth, she was dancing all around it. Then we created the clarity, messaging, strategy, brand, and website to share her perfect gift with the world. Since then, she’s booked several new clients, gone viral on LinkedIn, spoken at events, and much more. Discovering her THING catapulted her into her next chapter:

f you’re struggling to attract the right clients or feel like you’re constantly chasing instead of drawing people in, ask yourself:

  • What do people always rave about after working with me?
  • If I had to build a business around only one thing, what would it be?
  • What can I do better than 99% of people in my industry?

That answer? That’s your beef roti.

Lean into it. Build your reputation around it. And watch what happens when your work starts marketing itself.

And if you need help discovering your beef roti, that’s what I’m here for, reach out here.
